I typically laugh when people mention the smell of a book. Because books don’t smell like anything but paper. Anyway, scientists are now attempting to archive the smell of old books. Yes, really.
I’m not sure what they might be working in if they weren’t archiving the smell of books, but surely there is something more important than this. There must be. I don’t know what the stated goal is but it does sound like museums and libraries may be possible “beneficiaries”, if you can even call them such. Museums would have a more authentic smell and libraries, well, I have no idea. Go buy a book perfume and spray it around if the smell is so great. But conducting some kind if scientific experiment for this seems pointless.
Are you a book smeller? Please say no.

This is funny! 😂 I smell some books…only if they’re new. At least I don’t sniff money! 😷 I think it’s ridiculous to get scientists involved though. What a waste of time.

Lol, I don’t pick up a book specifically to smell it, lol. I do know there is a particular smell to books, especially new books, though.

The smell of a book changes as it gets older. I don’t deliberately smell books, but I have a really sensitive nose. There have been books at used-book sales (my favorite pastime) that I haven’t bought because of the way they smell.

Yes. For a year working at Half Price Books I am especially aware of the terrible odors that sometimes accompany used books.

This is such a cool post. I just bought a few old The Enchanted World series books and when I opened the box, they stunk so bad. Very vintage smell. It does exist! 🙂 Thanks for posting…
