I’ve been really open about my reading slumps. I always know one is lurking just around the corner. It doesn’t matter how much or how little I’m reading. There will always be periods during which I simply will not read. I’m in the midst of my first one of 2019 right now.
I’ve finished one book in the last month. Even knowing this I just haven’t had the desire to read recently. My current book is on my coffee table. A few nights ago I started it and only read about 30 pages before deciding to sleep. I haven’t picked it up since.
I don’t have a plan or something specific I do when this happens. And y’all know that sometimes one of my reading slumps can spread out over multiple years. I don’t think that’ll be the case this time around. Here’s to hoping it isn’t.
What do you do when you experience a reading slumps?
I am similarly in the middle of a reading slump. I’m fairly sure mine is mostly due to the whole life is busy and there are so many things that need done after work (and sleep is still useful…). That said, it doesn’t really make it any easier to deal with.
I’m afraid I don’t really have any solid answers, but I might be able to offer some suggestions. 🙂 First, perhaps it might be useful to remind yourself that it’s okay to not read as much as you might at other times. Second, it might help to possibly try switching to a different medium, like graphic novels or manga (still reading, but arguably a shorter individual time commitment). As a final suggestion, perhaps it might be useful to reread one of your favorite books as a way or “priming the pump.”

Not guilting myself for not reading is the first step. Changing the medium sometimes works, like a graphic novel or short story instead. Maybe even taking up a different narrative type like a story driven video game or a movie. Usually if I’m in a slump it’s because I have a story itch that hasn’t been scratched, and once I identify it and satisfy it, I can get back to my reading as usual.
I hope you find your way back to reading soon!

Oh, yes! I forgot about video games as an option, too. There are certainly some out there with a plot/execution as good as movies. I also tend to enjoy movies and TV shows because not all stories are books (just like not all stories appear on film).
