Bill O’Reilly Lost More Than A Job

By now you’re aware that Bill O’Reilly is no longer on Fox News. I imagine you’re also aware that he’s one of the most prolific authors writing today. That may soon be changing.

Publishing is like anything else, a business. It’s about money. While at Fox News he had millions of people to promote his books to. He was able to sell a great number of books this way. But that could be changing. After it became publicly known that his employer had paid out millions of dollars to settle sexual harassment allegations made against O’Reilly he was taken off the air.

His book sales saw an immediate downturn. His forthcoming book has not been pulled, though one can only wonder how much longer his publisher will be willing to release new books written by him if the financial numbers are no longer there.

The topic of his publisher standing behind him after the allegations came to light may surprise some, but not me. It’s all about the money.

Bill O’Reilly is essentially always in the news. Recently it’s been for some serious things that have happened in the past. It was recently reported by the NYT that Fox News has settled multiple sexual harassment allegations made against O’Reilly for millions of dollars.

This isn’t the point of this post because wherever you get your news has surely reported on the latest developments. The point of this is to tell you that a book on “family values” written by O’Reilly was just published during the same week these allegations and settlements have come to light. Hollywood couldn’t write this stuff.

I’m not even surprised by this. It often seems that those who are the worst examples of people want to tell others how they should or shouldn’t act.

The book is called Old School and is available wherever books are sold. I know you’re eager to get your hands on it.

This Week in Books: More “Killing”

It was announced this week that Bill O’Reilly will be releasing a new book later this year in his bestselling series. The new book will not focus on the death or assassination attempt of a prominent figure, but rather WWII between the US and Japan.

I love history. But am I the only person who can do without any more of Bill O’Reilly anything? His view of things is so skewed that I can’t imagine these books coming from a neutral viewpoint.

I haven’t read any of his books, and have no desire to do so. Have you read any in the series?

The Top Selling Book of 2014 was…

Honestly, if someone gave me all of three guesses I bet I could name three books out of the top ten best selling books of 2014. And I bet most of you could easily get at least one. Why? Because the YA trend is only continuing. Sure there was that ridiculous Slate article (that I won’t link to) that said YA shouldn’t be read by adults. Or something like that, I never got around to reading the whole thing. YA sells. And maybe it doesn’t make up as much of the total number of books as some might think, but when you’re talking mega bestsellers we all know they’re going to easily make those lists.

Now time for the guessing game. Which books do you think were amongst the ten best selling of the year? Come on. I’ll give you a minute to think it over.

When I look at the list I see the same thing I saw on the Twitter list of the year’s most mentioned books. I see John Green on top of the literary world at the moment. And I see Veronica Roth trying to take his title. Want to know what I don’t see? I don’t see any surprises. No random self published book. No unknown author miraculously making the list. It was a good year for book sales, and it was a good year for YA mega bestsellers.
