2017 Reading Challenge: The Lightning Thief

I’m probably the last person in America to have started this series. I mean, at this point Rick Riordan is writing a dozen other series he started after concluding this one. Oh well. Better late than never, right? Anyway, I have only good things to say about this one! Watch and see!

This book was the 7th book from my 2017 Reading Challenge and satisfied the requirement to read a book everyone else seems to have read already. This is also 1 of Amazon’s 100 Books Everyone Should Read. Two birds with one…book? Ha!

What did you think of this book?

JK Rowling Always has Final Word

We all know celebrities get trolled on social media daily, unfortunately it seems it happens worse to women because there are some real idiots in the world. In my experience seeing this unfold and discussed the trolls are just ignored. Mostly. But don’t come at JK Rowling thinking you’re getting off that easily.

She’s been outspoken on Twitter for as long as I can remember. And I don’t even follow her. I don’t think it would come as any surprise that she’s been outspoken against Trump.

People have said they’re burning their Potter books or they make up some nonsense about the message her series really sends because she’s being political. And SO OFTEN she shoots them down like Katniss in the arena. It’s hilarious when someone will comment about what’s in the books when they haven’t even read them. Oh boy.

Do you follow any authors on social media who tend to hit back when idiots throw nonsense their way?

Too Much, Just Too Much

It was announced this week that Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will not be adapted into three movies as previously announced. I know what you’re thinking. One movie, then, right? Wrong. Five. FIVE MOVIES.

I’ve already said before that I think anything having the slightest connection to Harry Potter is simply being shoved in our faces. JK Rowling is a person just like you and I. And right now she still sees dollar signs for her work. I’d take full advantage if I owned something that would likely net me tens or hundreds of millions of dollars. Sure. But it doesn’t mean everyone who loved the original movies and books will be stammering to get to theaters to see these movies.

I imagine they will do well, but the quality will likely be inferior to the original movies because there is one book setting the foundation for the movies rather than seven. I’ll be happy when there is nothing new related to Harry Potter.

Were you surprised when it was announced the tiny book would be adapted into a five film series?

When Will They End?

After the release of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child JK Rowling made a point to say Harry is done. Even though she’d already said the series would end after book 7. Which is fine until it was announced that there’d be 3 new ebooks released next month. None of the new ebooks is about Harry, but it just leads one to wonder when (or if) the books will ever stop.

I guess when you’re the author of the bestselling series ever you can do whatever you want to with your series. I know fans of the series will just about always buy anything remotely related to the wizarding world, but is that reason enough to keep releasing snippets of info fairly regularly? I mean, doesn’t she also post random things on Pottermore every once in awhile too?

I don’t know. I’m feeling like we’re being forced to remember the wizarding world. I’m just glad Suzanne Collins hasn’t done this with Katniss. Although I think there is a prequel movie being made, though I’m unsure of her actual involvement. But at least she isn’t releasing ancillary type stories or books that do nothing to add to the original trilogy. I say let Harry and the whole wizarding world finally shut the door on what’s been a remarkable couple of decades. But of course, I’m no one.

Are you still craving any and everything related to the wizarding world? Or are you ready to move on like I am?

(though I’m still reading the original series)

The Numbers are in

Unfortunately the script for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a runaway hit. In its first ten days in release the book version of the script has sold more than 3.3 million copies in North America alone. At the times of my original post on here and when I made my video for the script I hadn’t actually read any of the script. But now I have. Just a few bits and pieces to get a feel for the writing itself. My conclusion is quite simple. The writing is terrible. If no one had known anything about how this play came about and read this it would be obvious on page one that it wasn’t written by Rowling.

But there is some light at the end of the tunnel. Even with the great sales numbers they still don’t come close to the first day sales of Deathly Hallows, which sold more than 8 million copies in 2007. I’d say several factors are at play with the somewhat diminished numbers. First, it’s been nearly a decade since the final book was released. Second, this isn’t really a continuation of the series so many people know and love. Third, (and I saw this firsthand) a lot of people were unaware of this release. Fourth, the reviews. In my video last week I told y’all that it was rated 3.3 stars on Amazon after more than a thousand reviews. That trend is sticking. After more than 3000 reviews it is currently rated 3.4 stars out of 5. I think that number will stop people from buying who wanted to wait and see what initial readers thought of the script.

I’m hoping this doesn’t happen with the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them adaptations. Every one of the original Potter movies (like the books) was well received by viewers and critics alike, but hearing that a sequel is already in the works before the original is even released has me scratching my head. I mean, Warner Bros. just gave everyone the terrible trilogy they adapted from The Hobbit. Let’s hope they don’t make a habit of it.

On Harry Potter and the Disappointed Reader

I knew this would happen. I KNEW IT!

I waited a few days to see what the initial consensus would be regarding the newly released script. And guess what? The reaction has been less than stellar. I think there’s plenty of blame to go around, and every single bit of it should be placed upon the shoulders of the ignorant readers who expected something they were never getting in the first place.

Here are my full thoughts on the initial reactions to the script:

I know at least one of you all bought the script and immediately read it. Please tell me what you thought. I’m curious. No bending the truth!

Potter is (Kinda) back!

Harry Potter is back today. But I know there will be many disappointed fans. He’s back today in a completely different medium. People aren’t used to reading a play script when they’re expecting a “new book”. I’ve heard so many people say things like, “Oh, there’s a new book out?” But there isn’t. Not really.

But that’s okay. I’ve already seen dozens of pictures from midnight release parties. I’ll never get a book at midnight. Unless I’m walking through Wal Mart and see something at that late hour. Which is unlikely because I’ve never bought a book from a Wal Mart store, only online.

Anyway, here’s to people putting more money into JK Rowling’s pockets! We all know she needs it.

Are you getting your hands on Harry Potter and the Cursed Child? We all know I haven’t even gotten through the original series yet.

Harry Potter Book Eight is Coming

Do I even need to say more!? The eighth book in the series is coming THIS year. It’s based on the play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child set to debut on July 30. The book will be released on Harry and Rowling’s birthday the following day.

It is already the top selling book on Amazon, and will undoubtedly be one of the top selling books of 2016, but I think the opening day sales record set by book seven is safe.

The story takes place nineteen years after Harry’s time at Hogwarts. He’s working for the Ministry of Magic now and his youngest son is grappling with his own problems.

Are you excited for this new book? I am. And I’ve only read the first two in the series.

There’s More Than Just Hogwarts!

Tell me you haven’t heard the news today? Or maybe yesterday? Mrs. Rowling announced that there are more wizarding schools than Hogwarts. And the best part of it is there’s likely one near you!

I can’t remember all the names at the moment, but there are two more in Europe. There’s one in North America. There’s one in South America. There’s one in Asia. And one in Africa. Which means there’s a school of magic for all regions of the world.

She also said the schools are generally located in mountainous regions, which leads me to wonder about the exact location of the North American school.

What do you think of there being more schools!? And where do you think the nearest one is to you? I think she said there are 11 more besides Hogwarts.

George R. R. Martin is Right on Track

So I’m lying here before bed just reading a few articles, right? I try reading as many book articles as I can in order to stay up-to-date on the happenings in the book world. But I don’t really have a particular type of article I like more than another. But I stumbled upon one about Mr. Martin.

I’m not a watcher of the HBO series based on his bestselling books, and I recently sold my copies of the books to my Half Price Books store in an effort to get books off of my TBR shelf I have no interest in reading. But I know a lot of criticism is thrown his way because everyone is so anxiously awaiting the release of the next book in the series.

Well, it turns out all those people are foolish. Mhm. The Washington Post created this graphic to show how fast authors publish books relative to the number of pages in their respective series. Take a look.

His next book could come out next year and he’d still be writing at the same pace as the much beloved J.K. Rowling. Welp.

So get off his back and let the mam write.

Would you have ever guessed he’s writing at the same pace as her and faster than other prominent authors of the last century? I wouldn’t have just based on what everyone says about him.
